Introduction to Robotics and sensors

Objective and mission

Robotics is a multi-disciplines skill that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Our objective is to work closely with schools to provide robotics enrichment workshop, to inspire and motivate students through building robot and program coding. Our mission is to develop student’s problem solving and analytical skill, and to promote lifelong learning in robotics applications.

Workshop Description

This workshop is open to secondary and polytechnic students in Singapore. The training is conducted by experience trainers. Participants will learn how to assemble a Arduino based RoboCar, write coding program, read sensors data, control motion, perform obstacle avoidance, etc.

Course fees (free-of-charge)

This 2.5 hrs workshop is free-of-charge, brought to you by Robotics Society of Singapore and supported by lifelong learning council. However, due to seats limitation, registration will be on a first-come first-served basis.

Aging China Gets Robot Boost

Midea (60%) and Yaskawa (40%) partner on nursing-care robots

Midea and Yaskawa see huge demand for service robots to assist China’s fast-growing elderly population.

“China had about 130 million people aged 65 or older in 2015, according to the United Nations. That number is expected to rise to 200 million by 2025 and top 400 million in 2055.” —Nikkei Asian Review

The partners intend to offer 10 to 15 elder-oriented products by 2019, including “exercise equipment that can be used lying down and a toilet system for bedridden patients.” They anticipate an initial $4.47 million to $5.36 million in sales for fiscal 2018. —Nikkei Asian Review

Googling Russian robotics
If you search “Russian robotics” in Google, you’ll get instant returns of 870k pages on Russia’s military robots, some with Vladimir Putin pictured nearby admiring a humanoid machine-soldier riding an ATV on a test track. The impression here is that Russian robotics is totally about armies of killer bots all named Ivan. It’s not. You’ve got to dig around to find Putin congratulating Ekaterina Bereziy, co-founder and CEO of ExoAtlet, on her award-winning exoskeleton. The World Economic Council voted her as one of 2017’s Young Global Leaders. Last December, her company sold twenty ExoAtlet exoskeletons to Moscow’s Shvetsovaya social and medical rehabilitation center.

MADISON – Uber Technologies grounded all of its driverless cars deployed in pilot programs in Tempe, Arizona, Pittsburgh and San Francisco, after a crash Friday in Arizona. Reportedly, the Uber SUV was on a main road in the city when another vehicle failed to yield while turning left in front of it. The vehicles collided, the Uber vehicle rolled on to its side.

SAN FRANCISCO—Intel Corp. announced it would merge all of its artificial intelligence (AI) efforts into a single cross-company organization headed by Naveen Rao, formerly the CEO of Intel acquisition Nervana Systems. In a blog post published Thursday (March 23), Rao said the Artificial Intelligence Products Group (AIPG) would align resources from across Intel, including engineering, labs and software, as Intel builds on its Intel Nervana platform, a full-stack of hardware and software AI offerings.

Robotics-Assisted Needle Steering (special issue) Call for Paper

The area of medical robotics has significantly grown over the past decade to allow for the use of new robotic systems in various medical interventions spanning surgery and therapy. Robotic systems are used to augment and extend the capabilities of medical professionals while also providing benefits for patients and the healthcare system. Among the most prevalent medical procedures is percutaneous needle insertion. This technique has become part of routine clinical practice for tissue sampling, pinpoint drug delivery, permanent brachytherapy, radiofrequency and microwave ablation of liver, lung, and kidney, etc. The success of these procedures heavily relies on accurate needle placement within an inner body target location. However, during insertion, the needle interacts with the surrounding tissue and deflects away from its intended trajectory, which can negatively affect the outcomes of needle-based procedures.  To overcome this problem, in recent years a significant research effort has been made towards developing robotic systems to steer bevel-tipped needles under computer control. The purpose of this special issue is to present papers addressing complementary aspects of robotics-assisted needle steering, ranging from modelling needle-tissue interaction to the design, implementation and experimental validation of robotic systems for needle steering.

ICRA 2017 – Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Real-world Solutions

The 2017 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) will be held from May 29 to June 3, 2017 at Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. ICRA is IEEE Robotics and Automation Society’s flagship conference and is a premier international forum for robotics researchers to present their work.

It is timely that Singapore is hosting ICRA in 2017, as the country strives to be a Smart Nation, one where people are empowered by technology to lead meaningful and fulfilled lives, and to support better living, stronger communities, and create more opportunities for all.

The conference theme, “Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Real-world Solutions”, underscores the need for innovative R&D talent, dynamic and goal-driven entrepreneurs and practitioners using robotics and automation technology to solve challenging real-world problems such as shortage of labour, an ageing society, and creating sustainable environments.

ICRA 2017 will introduce a new Robotics Innovation & Entrepreneurship Forum, alongside an industrial forum, a government forum, an ASEAN & emerging country forum, and a public forum (ICRA-X) centred on the conference theme, in addition to plenary and keynote sessions, technical paper sessions, workshop and tutorial sessions, exhibitions, and robot challenges. We welcome researchers, engineers, students, industry, investors and people from all walks of life interested in robotics and automation to participate in this gala robotics event!

Call for Late Breaking Results

At ICRA 2017, there will be a Late Breaking Results Poster Session where researchers have the opportunity to present recent results in robotics and automation.

Posters in the Late Breaking Results session are not peer-reviewed and do not count as publications. Indeed, this session is ideal for researchers to get feedback on their work prior to submitting it for formal publication.

Prospective poster presenters should submit a 1-page extended abstract by March 10, 2017 through the PaperPlaza system.

Decisions will be made as soon as possible after the abstract is submitted, but no later than March 24, 2017. Final abstracts for accepted posters will be due by April 7, 2017. At least one of the authors of each accepted poster is expected to be present at the poster during the entire poster session.

Poster abstracts are not peer-reviewed and are not publications. As such, they will not be included in the conference proceedings and IEEE Xplore. The abstract will be available to the conference attendees in electronic form. The Late Breaking Results Poster Session will be a great avenue to share your latest work and we strongly encourage you to submit your interesting new work for this session.
